Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based person-centered communication method that assists individuals in resolving ambivalence to change by eliciting and strengthening their own motivation and reasons for change in an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion. MI proceeds from a core belief that individuals are naturally inclined to strive to be their best selves. Beyond the practical skills involved, this approach emphasizes a way of being with clients that forms the foundation of its effectiveness. Training helps to better equip a variety of practitioners to meet clients where they are, affirm their strengths, listen for, and evoke their inherent motivation, and collaborate with them to set their own actionable personal change goals. All sessions include opportunities to practice skills using various exercises.
